House. c1848 with mid-C20 alterations. Brick on sandstone base, slate roof
with ridge end stacks. Rectangular three-bay plan. Single storey. Main east
front articulated as 1:3:1 bays; central part breaks forward slightly and is
gabled with moulded, bargeboards on shaped brackets; 2-light C20 casements in
original openings in outer bays; central part has half-glazed door flanked by
(probably original) single-light casements. A C20 gabled timber porch with
trellis infill has been added. Trefoil opening in stone triangle in gable
apex. One of 40 similar Chartist houses in Dodford built mainly on four-acre
plots by the Chartist Land Company. As on other Chartist estates each small-
holding was intended to provide its occupant with an independent livelihood
and the opportunity to qualify for a county vote. (W Bond, From Hamlet to
Parish, 1972).
