Barn, stable and
cider house at
Callow Farm
II
Barn, stable and cider house. Late C17 and mid- to late C18. Sandstone
rubble with roofs of corrugated iron and slate. The stable appears to be
the earliest building and is of a single storey with a steep roof. It has
two 2-light rebated and chamfered mullioned windows. Between them are two
doorways which have segmental heads cut into lintels, and quoined jambs.
Projecting forwards at the right under a slate roof is a two-storey cider
house which is of three bays. It has windows with timber mullions, with
segmental arched heads on the ground floor and built under the eaves above.
The doorway, in the middle bay, has a segmental arched head. At the left
of the range is a barn, which has two rows of ventilation slits, a wide
entrance with a timber lintel under the eaves, and a small opening to the
left. High up to the left of the doorway is an illegible plaque of late
C18 type. At the left end of the barn is a lower extension under a slate
roof, with a ground floor doorway with segmental head and a first floor
pitching hole. Interior: the barn has trusses with tie-beams and light
collars. The cider house is said to contain the base of a cider mill.
