Cottage. C17 with C20 extension and modernisation. Local stone rubble with some
brick dressings; slate rubble stack and chimneyshaft; thatch roof.
Plan: 3-room plan cottage facing west-south-west, say west. Both end rooms are
unheated and the centre room has an axial stack backing onto the right (south) room.
A larger 2-storey bay projects forward from the centre and there is a porch in the
angle of this bay (on its right) and the main block. It seems that the bay, the
porch, and the right room (the present kitchen and containing the main stair) are
the result of a major C20 refurbishment; maybe a new build, maybe a rebuild of
earlier outbuildings. The C17 house is the large heated room (now in the centre)
and the smaller unheated room at the left end. 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular 2:1:1 window front of C19 and C20 casements mostly with glazing
bars. The older windows are confined to the left 2-window section where a couple
contain rectangular panes of leaded glass. The roof is gable-ended with the right
gable as a glass sun roof. The front bay roof is half-hipped. The eaves are
carried down over the porch which includes a round-headed doorway containing a C20
door in its side.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey although C17
carpentry was seen in the heated room including a chamfered axial beam and large
fireplace with oak-framed front.
