Description

COTLEIGH COTLEIGH
ST 20 SW
11/11 Stables and coach house
- approximately 30 metres north-west
of Cotleigh House
GV II

Coach house and stables. Late C18 or early C19, maybe including some walling from
an earlier church house or cottages. Local stone rubble with brick dressings, the
front is wholly brick on low stone rubble footings; it is Flemish bond brickwork
with some burnt headers; slate roof, maybe thatch originally.
Plan: large coachhouse and stables. The building impinges into the north-east
corner of the churchyard but backs onto it. It faces west onto the cobbled stable
yard. There is a large coach house either end of a stable which breaks forward a
little from the main block. There are haylofts over.
Exterior: the centre part of the front (the stables) breaks forward. Each end is a
large coach house doorway with segmental arch heads and containing large double
doors. The stable has a symmetrical 2-window front around a central doorway. This
doorway has a pointed arch head; it contains a 2-flap door and overlight with Y-
tracery glazing bars and a pattern of leaded glass panes following the Y-tracery
pattern. The doorway is flanked by pointed arch-headed windows also containing
original Y-tracery glazing bars but the glass here has been replaced. The first
floor windows are also arch-headed but have no glazing bars; they have gables over.
The main roof is hipped each end and sweeps forward in a curve to the front
projection. In the right (north) end wall there is a hayloft loading hatch which
rises a short distance into the eaves and the roof sweeps over in an undulating
eyebrow. In the left (south) end wall overlooking the churchyard is a complete
original window; it has a pointed arch head, Y-tracery glazing bars and panes of
leaded glass which follow the shape of the glazing bars.
Interior: not inspected.
This fine coach house and stable block is probably contemporary with Cotleigh House
(q.v). Its position in relation to the churchyard suggests that it may occupy the
site of a church house or cottages but there is no obvious evidence for an earlier
building in the masonry.
