Mill and mill house. Mid C19, the mill was converted to domestic use circa 1980.
Local stone and flint rubble, stone rubble stacks with C19 brick chimneyshafts slate
roof.
Plan: mill and adjoining house built side by side facing south at the bottom of a
hillslope. The 2 were built together. The house is to the right (east). It has a
3-room plan. The right room is the parlour, the central room the dining room and
there is an axial stack between them serving back-to-back fireplaces. Between the
dining room and kitchen is the entrance hall and staircase. The kitchen is the left
room and it has a gable-end stack backing onto the mill. The mill is set back very
slightly from the house. The house is 2 storeys. The mill is taller, 2 storeys
with lofts, and there is a single storey outshot on the left (west) end.
Exterior: the house has a regular but not symmetrical 4-window front of C20
replacement casements with glazing bars. The ground floor windows have flat arches
over; the right one of brick, the others of stone. The front doorway is left of
centre and it contains the original 6-panel door behind a contemporary gabled porch
with cusped bargeboards pierced with quatrefoils. The mill has 2 ground floor
doorways, one either side of a central window. At first floor level there is a
central window and a loading doorway directly above the left doorway and above the
loading doorway is a gabled hoist housing supported on raking struts. The doorways
and windows have low segmental arches over. The windows are C20 casements similar
to those in the house, the doors are C19 and C20 plain plank doors. There are 2
more C20 casements to the outshot. The roofs over the outshot, mill and house are
gable-ended.
Interior: contains a great deal of original carpentry and joinery detail and the
mill contains the C19 gearing machinery.
This mill is one of a group of listed buildings in the scattered hamlet of Rawridge.
