Description

UPOTTERY RAWRIDGE
ST 20 NW
7/128 Lilac Cottage
-
GV II
Cottage. Probably C18, modernised circa 1960. Plastered local stone and flint
rubble, maybe with some cob; stone rubble stack topped with C19 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: 3-room plan cottage facing south-south-west, say south. The centre room is
heated by an axial stack backing onto the right (east) end room. Both end rooms are
unheated. The entrance and staircase lie between the centre and left (west) end
rooms. Since most of the structural timbers have been plastered over it is not
possible to determine any details of the original layout or any development. 2
storeys.
Exterior: irregular 2-window front of C20 casements with glazing bars, the first
floor ones rising a short distance into the eaves. The front doorway is towards the
left end and it contains a C20 door behind a contemporary porch. The main roof is
half-hipped each end. In the rear wall there is a first floor window at the east
end which is C19 or earlier, a 2-light casement containing rectangular panes of
leaded glass.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but the owner
claims that all the beams have been boxed in and the fireplace is blocked. All that
could be seen was the result of the circa 1960 modernisation.
Lilac Cottage is one of a group of listed buildings that make up the scattered
hamlet of Rawridge.
