Former farmhouse. Of, possibly earlier core, refurbished with a new crosswing in
the late C19. The C17 section is plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone
rubble stacks topped with plastered brick; thatch roof. The C19 wing is stretcher
bond brick with a brick stack and red tile roof.
Plan: L-plan farmhouse. The main block faces south-south-west, say south. The
left (west) end room was probably a parlour and the centre room the kitchen. There
is an axial stack between these rooms. It serves back-to-back fireplaces and the
lobby entrance is in front of it. The right end room of the main block was probably
the dairy or buttery. At the right (east) end is the C19 2-room plan crosswing
which projects forward and is served by a stack in the wall between the wing and
main block. The main block appears to have a C17 layout but no internal inspection
was available at the time of this survey and therefore it is not possible to
determine whether the house is any older. It is 2 storeys with a lean-to outshot on
the left end.
Exterior: the main block has a nearly symmetrical front with 4 ground floor and 3
first floor windows, all similar late C19 casements with glazing bars and with
thatch eyebrows over the upper ones. The front doorway is roughly central and it
contains a late C19 4-panel door behind a contemporary gabled porch on plain posts.
The main roof is hipped to left. The front end of the wing has late C19 transomed
windows and the roof is gable-ended.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but it is
said to contain C17 carpentry detail including clean jointed cruck roof trusses.
