16/105 Upper Gulmswell
GV II
House. Modern painted date of 1571 on front, late C20 rear wing. Whitewashed
plastered cob and stone rubble ; thatched roof with plain ridge, gabled at ends ; end
stacks with rendered shaftes. Rear wing plastered with a 2-span tiled roof.
Plan: 2 room and through passage plan with a stair inserted in the passage ; rear
left C20 wing. Carpentry detail seen at time of survey is consistent with a late C16
or C17 date but the house may be a remodelling of a medieval building.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over
the first floor windows. C20 gabled thatched porch to front door to passage ; C20
fenestration of 1-, 2- and 3-light small pane timber casements.
Interior: Not inspected throughout. Plank and muntin screen between passage and left
hand room which has a good ovolo-moulded cross beam and exposed C20 joists. C20
chimneypiece probably concealing earlier features. Other carpentry likely to exist.
Roof: Not inspected at time of survey ; there is a possibility that medieval timbers
could survive which would require revising the suggested dating of the house.
Upper Gulmswell, sited back from and below the present road level and across a ford
is an attractive traditional thatched house.
