House. Circa mid C17, possibly a remodelling of an earlier house. Whitewashed
plastered cob and stone rubble ; thatched roof with plain ridge, half-hipped at ends;
2 projecting rear lateral stacks, projecting left end stack with bread oven bulge.
Plan: Single depth 3 room and through passage plan, lower end to the right, part of
the lower end passage partition and the partition between the hall and inner room no
longer exist, winder stair in rear right corner of hall. In the C18 the house was
used as 2 cottages (information from owner).
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over
the first floor windows ; steps up to plank front door to right of centre into
through passage. C20 fenestration of 2 light casement windows except ground floor
right which is 4-light.
Interior: C17 carpentry survives ; scratch-moulded joists to the passage which has
part of a plank and muntin screen at the lower end and a complete screen at the
higher end with scratch moulding on the hall side. The hall has chamfered scroll-
stopped crossbeams, scratch-moulded joists and an open fireplace with a chamfered
stopped lintel and red sandstone jambs. The inner room fireplace is blocked, the
lower end fireplace rebuilt, the lower end has closely-spaced axial beams of slender
scantling.
Roof: Not thoroughly inspected at time of survey but trusses of a late C17 character
: halved and pegged at the apex with a threaded ridge and purlins and straight
principal rafters which may be fixed to wall posts.
Called Tarr's Cottage at one time, the present name probably refers to Sally Cumming,
the wife of William Cumming the thatcher who died in 1890 (Boyd and Whiteaway).
The house fronts the main street through the village and makes an important
contribution to the conservation area.
