Description

BOVEY TRACEY
SX 87 NW

5/1 Higher Crownley Farmhouse
- barn about 50 metres south-
west on opposite side of road

- II

Barn. Late C16 or C17 with added wing. Cob on a granite rubble plinth of large
stones. Corrugated-iron roof. Wide doorway on north-east side having flat,
chamfered wood lintel; jambs missing. Roof contains at least 2 side-pegged
jointed-cruck trusses (the barn was full of straw when inspected); slots for butt
purlins, few of which survive, end slots for former threaded ridge. Barns with
jointed crucks are rare in Devon. The adjacent farmhouse is now badly ruined; see
