History in Structure

Conservatory, Attached Garden Walls and Tunnel

A Grade II Listed Building in Calke, Derbyshire

The Servants Tunnel

Uploader's Comments

The tunnel was built so that the House staff, Servants and Gardners could go about their daily chores and not be seen by the Family or any Guests at the house.
The tunnel entrance is from the courtyard and is very narrow, lined with coarse red brick, the uneven floor is also laid with red brick. (has since been rendered in places to hold tight the roof)
There is no lighting, and the servants would only have had candles by which to light the way.
The Tunnel is approx 100m in length and exits in the Brewhouse, on the side of the farm stable block.
