Three Forcing Walls and
Attached Greenhouses
in Melbourne Hall

Three forcing walls. c1704. Erected as part of a French style
garden designed by Royal Gardeners to Queen Anne, London and
Wise, for Thomas Coke of Melbourne Hall with work carried out by
William Cooke of Walcot. Red brick with vitrified headers and
stone copings. Three 12ft high straight walls, set about 30
feet apart and each with pilaster strips at regular intervals
along the southern face. Two northern walls have later
outbuildings and greenhouses attached. Included in the
Derbyshire Historic Gardens Register at Grade I. See item 6/63
