Milestone. Circa early C19. Circa early C19. Painted stone with cast-iron plate. Square-plan stone with rounded head. Cast-iron rectangular plate inscribed: London 52 and Basingstoke 6. Plate on opposite side is missing. The Andover and Basingstoke turnpike was opened in 1754 and this is one of a series of milestones on the turnpike.
A good example of a circa early C19 milestone with an inscribed cast-iron plate.
