SU 20 NE LYNDHURST EMERY DOWN

GV II

Church. 1864 by W Butterfield. Red brick with blue brick diaperwork and stone
bands, stone dressings, plain tile roof. Plan of chancel with 2 gabled projections
to north and one to south, long nave with north-west porch and west bellcote, later
Early English style. East end has diaper work on high plinth with heavy stone
offset acting as sill to 5-stepped-trefoiled-lancet window. 3 blue brick bands
either side of head quatrefoil and diaperwork in gable with raised dentilled eaves.
To north on both projections low-down diaperwork. One has shouldered-head lancet,
other pointed 2-trefoiled-light window, and south projection similar. Nave has on
both sides heavy stone offset to plinth acting as sills to trefoiled lancets, with
stone band running right across at springing level. Lancet in east bay and in
west of centre bay, 2 in east of centre bay with buttress either side. North-west
porch has low sloping buttresses on corners and stone kneelers to gable wall.
Pointed doorway under label. Gable has diaperwork and inside diamonds created by
it are what look like doves nests. 3-light trefoiled west window. Gabled west
bellcote with some decoration. Interior is restrained Butterfield. Roof with thin
scissor bracing to principals, which have open cusp work above.
