Description

SU 71 SW ROWLANDS CASTLE IDSWORTH

9/16 Old School and School House

II

Former Idsworth school and master's house, now two dwellings. 1851 (by William
Burn), a building of Neo-Jacobean style in the manner of nearby Idsworth House, and
apparently an estate building. Red brick walls of Flemish bond, with diaper patterns
in blue headers, Bath stone dressings; plinth, chamfered quoins, gables with
copings, finials, middle steps and kneelers. Steep slate roof, square flues to
Tudor stacks. The north front has a central school hall, now with two gabled
dormers, with three large mullion and transom windows and a gabled porch at the
east side. This block terminates at the east end as a gabled cross wing of
one storey and attic, with one above three windows, set in recessed panels. The
west end is a taller crosswing (the house) of two storeys, with a west front having
a gabled central porch with a gable above, and a large gable at the south side. Most
of the cast-iron diaper casements survive. Boarded coupled doors. The rear has
projections at each side, with a flat-roof C20 extension at the east side.
