3/8 Church of St Mary the Virgin
II
Parish church. 1868, by Woodyer. Walls of coursed squared knapped flint,
with stone dressings, with a tiled roof and shingled bell turret. Replacing an
earlier building, the style is Early English; aisleless nave and chancel, with
vestry and organ chamber north of the chancel, south porch, and western bell
tower. There are cill bands, buttresses and plinth, with lancet windows generally,
2 coupled lancets (1 with plate tracery) and a tall lancet east window, with
recessed and banded columns supporting a cusped hood-mould. The bell chamber is
supported on internal timber framing, the exterior is shingled and includes a
broach spire. The porch is a gabled timber frame resting on a low wall. The
interior is entirely Victorian, but the pulpit has a Jacobean sounding board; a
floor slab at the west end records the death of Thomas Plowden in 1698.
