Description

SU 73 SW NEWTON VALENCE

5/20 Charity Farmhouse

II

House. C16, later C18, and early C20. A late-medieval timber-framed house of 3 main
bays, the wider central bay (hall) having a smoke bay; later altered by the
insertion of a chimney in the smoke bay and of a 1st floor to the hall, producing
a lobby-entrance arrangement of door and staircase. A single-storeyed C18
wing projects at right-angles at one end, and a C20 outshot (with open front)
at the other. 2 storeys, 4 windows. Prominent hipped roof, and single stack.
The frame is exposed in the upper part of the north-east elevation, with brick
infill, with lower walls of brickwork in Flemish bond: the frame is partly-exposed
in the lower wall of the south-west elevation, the upper being tile-hung, with
patterned bands: the south-east end is tile-hung above a wall of malmstone, with
brick dressings, which continues around the wing. Casements. Early C20 door
beneath a moulded canopy on brackets. The timber-frame is exposed within; in
several parts the walls have been lined with small panelling within moulded
framework (C18), which has been re-fitted from another source.
