Description

ROMSEY EXTRA ROMSEY ROAD A 31
SU 31 NW
6/9 Embley Lodge North
(formerly Lodge to
Embley Park)

GV II

Lodge, northern one of a pair linked by a gateway, at the entrance to Embley Park.
c1840, with mid C19 and C20 extensions. Stucco walls, moulded copings, caps,
impost bands and panels, plain plinth, bold keys above the arched openings,
eaved architrave to the doorway (now filled). Hipped slate roof. The oldest
part is a tall single-storeyed pavilion in classical style and of symmetrical
form: the rectangular block has broad rusticated pilasters at each corner, and
between, at front and rear, are arches to the window openings (with triple keys),
the wider part facing the driveway containing the former entrance: the upper
part is a plain parapet with central panels, surmounted at front and rear by
concave pedestals (lacking a top ornament). At the front (southeast) a wall
extends at each side, with a dropping curve to a gate pier at the south side,
and on the north with a dropping curve and extension (with a C19 window) to a
second pier, which stands forward, being attached to the curved end of the wall.
The arched windows are sashes. A larger two-storeyed mid C19 wing has been
attached to the original unit, being a plain rectangular block with stuccoed walls,
small casements and a slate roof: this continues as a C20 extension, northwards
from the north end.
