This photo was taken in the summer of 1960 or 1961 when my late parents were looking for a period property to restore.. It shows the gable wall at the side towards Mill Lane. The cottage was actually two dwellings at the time in a very poor state of repair and uninhabited. However, I thought it was a remarkably complete example of a 17th century timber framed cottage. Looking inside it appeared that the rustic infilled brickwork may have replaced wattle and daub. The chimney on the gable wall was clearly a later addition as was the lean-to which from recent photographs has now been replaced. The garden was very overgrown and there were two holes in the roof. A further view in around 1964 showed most of the clay roof tiles missing and the cottage derelict However it seemed likely that this cottage may have originally been thatched as the tiles seemed to be of later origin and other evidence from the roof timbers. This photo was taken with a cheap camera.
