Large detached dwelling, perhaps originally a mill and dwelling. Part mid C17
and part mid to late C18. The other part is rendered, stone slate roof with 2
brick stacks, one at end gable and one to ridge, the large later block is in
coursed rubble, with large flush quoins formerly lime-washed, to moulded cornice
and blocking carried round to meet older block, hipped stone slate roof with
single brick stack. Appears to have been a lofty and narrow mill building, with
a low return wing at the north end at the street junction, and a large rather
fine mill owner's house attached to the south, the three units enclosing a tight
courtyard set down from road level on the west side. Mill block, west: mainly
blank, but one C19 3-light wood mullioned casement to eaves, and another at
first floor, also at ground floor a 2-light hollow chamfer mullioned casement;
off-centre left is a plank door in broad stone surround of mid Cl9 with peaked
arch in very deep lintel. Each side is 3 storeys, irregular fenestration,
including two 2-light reserve chamfer and 2 similar with stopped rips, and one
4-light with stopped drip mostly with C19 iron casements, and a late oriel,
nearly opposite main (west) entrance to an old door opening with C20 door and a
further C20 door at junction with end wall of later block. At the higher, gable
end, are 2 small openings in the gable. Main block, south face: 2 storeys and
basement, 4-windowed, principally 12-pane sash, but bay 2 at second floor is
blank, and at this level between 3 and 4 a smaller 12-pane inserted later. At
first floor windows 1 and 2 are late C20 aluminium casement, and 3 is blank.
Semi-basement has 2/2-light hollow chamfer casements, that to right with cut-
back drip, and a central plank door in flush opening. End wall, to road, has a
blocked 2-light hollow chamfer mullioned casement at first floor, with stopped
drip. In courtyard a one storey part octagonal porch to door under semi-
circular arch with key-stone, in internal corner. Small service block in 2
storeys, with stone slate roof, with C19 3-light wood casement over 3-light
reserve chamfer mullioned casement; also a stone lintel over chute entry from
road. Interior: roof of mill was until mid C20 continuous open A-frame, roof
structure remains; here also a wood spiral stair through full height, flanking
fireplace at gable end. Later block has various shuttered openings and a full-
length basement room. Interior not fully inspected. The mill is reputed to
date from 1647, and the whole group is on a grand scale, but is declining
architecturally as a result of insertion of non-conforming new windows. It lies
on the old road through Slad, no bypassed by the B4070 to the west.
