ST 89 NE MINCHINHAMPTON BOX

II

Detached house. Mid-late c17, enlarged mid-late C18. Remodelled
with new west front range c1800 for Peter Playne. Altered 1904 by
V.A. Lawson for A.J. Playne. Coursed, squared and random rubble
limestone; ashlar chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey; 2
parallel ranges incorporating central staircase hall. West front:
3-window fenestration, 15-pane sashes to ground floor, 12-pane to
upper floor, all with marginal glazing bars. Central doorway with
upper floor tripartite sash above. Partially glazed lean-to
verandah to ground floor added in 1904, Tuscan timber pilasters to
9 bays, central pediment and entablature with dentil enriched
cornice. Hipped roof, ridge-mounted chimneys having moulded caps.
Part of rear range projects beyond north end to left, 3-window
fenestration, all 12-pane sashes. Garage doors inserted in north
end, ground floor altered. South end: 2-window fenestration,
sashes as to front. Rear: gabled C17 house at centre of rear
range, much altered when incorporated in c1800 alterations.
Interior: fine curved open-well staircase with iron balustrade,
stair hall with top lighting. c1800 gateway to north.
