19/240 Forwood West and Forwood East
II
Formerly large detached house, now 2 houses. Mid-late C17;
enlarged and extensively restored early-mid C19 for Playne family.
Random rubble limestone, roughcast-faced except rear; ashlar
chimneys; stone slate roof. Two-storey with attic. Front: 4
parapet gables, 3 to right forming symmetrical element with smaller
central gable, this having doorway with 2-light mullioned casement
above and small niche in gable apex, ball finial. Canted bay
window to outer pair of gables with 3-light upper floor and 2-light
attic mullioned casements above, all apparently C19 replacements.
Further gable to left with mixed C19 fenestration. Flat roofed
addition in angle with gabled wing to right. Good set of 5 ridge-
mounted chimneys with paired shafts, combined moulded caps with
tapering square stone pots. Parapet gabled ends. Rear: various
gabled wings. Interior not inspected: probably extensively altered
in Cl9.
