House. Early C17. Limestone near ashlar, stone slate roof, concrete tile to
back slopes. Twin-gabled former through-passage plan. Two storeys and attics,
2 windows. Ground floor has 3-light flanking panelled door, then a large multi-
pane former shop window with to its right a second door and, in the corner a
2-light wood casement in a former door opening; these to a moulded string,
broken at the large window, and raised over right-hand opening. First floor has
3-light and second floor 2-light casements, all to stopped hoods, and chamfer-
mullioned. Gables are coped, large stack set back, right and a brick stack,
left. Back also with twin gables, one ground floor casement has hollow mould
mullion. Interior much altered, but incorporates 2 good stone doric columns
carrying timber beam and built into wall; these said to be from former market
hall here or in immediate vicinity. Deep chamfer beams, stone flag floor.
First floor includes a timber-framed partition. Roof in 5 bays, A-frame, much
replaced work. First floor at right party wall has curved recess possibly
indicating position of early staircase. Early C20 photographs show a small shop
to the left of the entrance door; the name of the property derives from the shop
owner. With The Gables (q.v.) adjacent at right angles, and Hamand Antiques
(q.v.) to the left, Thorne completes an important group in the town centre.
