Detached house. Late C18/early C19, extended to west and rear in
1862. Coursed rubble stone faced in ashlar to south, stone slate
roof with stone end stack to right and brick external stack with
stone flue to left. Single range of 3 storeys with single storey
extension to west. Three windows, triple plate glass sashes to
first and second floors, similar to left on ground floor with large
canted bay of C19 to right and central recessed C20 glazed double
doors. Plat bands between floors. Rear has long sloping roof
almost forming true catslide, with main entrance porch of late C19
and scattered fenestration. Single storey wing to west has glazed
double doors of C20 and flanking plate glass sashes on south side.
House bought and extended by the father of Alice Liddell, said to
be the model for Alice in Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland",
and there is a small door in the hall said to be that referred to
in the story. Alice's uncle was vicar of South Cerney at this
time, i.e. c1862.
