Description

SU 2199 LECHLADE SHERBORNE STREET
(west side)

10/226 Sherborne House Cottage and
adjoining gatepiers on west

GV II

Former stable and coachhouse to Sherborne House, converted to
residential use. Early C18. Rubble stone with quoins, stone slate
roof, large stone ridge stack with brick flue. Long slightly
canted range. Rear of west facade has central 2-light stone
mullion, double doors to left and triple to right in former coach
or cart entries, and 3 rows of dovecot perches below eaves with
brick detailing, cut into by inserted loft door on right. Front
end of west facade has 2-light stone mullion on ground floor and 2
inserted C20 two-light casements over. Narrow gable front to
street has inserted C20 windows - large 3-light on first floor, two
2-lights on ground floor. Although much modifiers, this building
retains a very interesting frontage towards Sherborne House, to
which it is linked by a tall stone wall forming a courtyard between
the 2 buildings which is entered through the gatepiers. Pair of
gatepiers adjoining to west, both one single large stone, about 3m
high with stone ball finial on base of square section, with pier
sweeping down and out at rear.
