Manor House. Early-mid C17, late C17-early C18 and C19. Ashlar,
stone slate roof. Late C17-early C18 main body formerly 'U'-shaped
in plan, one wing and range at rear of present south wing now
demolished. Single bay C19 wing runs away at right angles from
south wing. Late C17-C18 main body; 2 storeys and attic lit by
two C20 two-light slate hung roof dormers to west wing. Both wings
3-windowed, all hollow-moulded stone-mullioned cross windows with
rectangular leaded panes, band between ground and first floors.
Blocking of former central front door visible in south range. C20
plank door with fillets off-centre left, within plain surround
continued up over hall light. C20 plank door inserted in bottom of
partly blocked cross window towards gable end of west wing. Stone-
mullioned cross windows in gable ends of both wings. Open fronted
lean-to at rear of west wing. Successive C17 wings to north of
main body, earliest part 3 storeys, 6-light stone-mullioned
casement with central king mullion, square mullions and stopped
hood to ground floor. C20 plank door within open-sided porch with
hipped roof right. Two-light stone-mullioned casements to first
and second floors, one now blocked and partly obscured by C19
extension at right-angles. Later C17 range ; 2 storeys, 2 and 3-
light hollow-chamfered stone-mullioned casements. Stopped hood
over window at right-hand end. Two plank doors with timber
lintels, another single width plank door now blocked. Three-light
stone-mullioned casement with stopped hood and unglazed bull's-eye
window in gable end. Wall facing courtyard; 2 Cotswold dormers
lit by 2-light stone-mullioned casements, lateral chimney gable
right. Three-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement with
stopped hood to ground floor. C20 plank door with timber lintel
left. Roof; lateral, axial and gable end stacks with moulded
cappings. Flat and stepped gable end coping to successive C17
wings.
Interior; moulded tie beam initialled and dated 'W.M 161-' and
with jewelled steps (defaced at one end) in C19 extension (probably
reused). Staircase removed to Stowell Park (q.v. Yanworth CP).
Original roof timbers. Late C17 house was built for Richard Howe
