5/51 Two Gazebos and attached walls,
railings and steps at Hidcote

II
Two gazebos. Early C20. Designed and decorated by Major
Lawrence Johnston creator of Hidcote Manor garden. Squared
limestone wall and steps lead up to terrace on which gazebos stand.
Gazebo left has undecorated domed ceiling and two sets of double
doors in opposition. The left hand door leads down a flight of 10
steps flanked a curving iron balustrade. Gazebo: Flemish bond
brick with limestone slate roofs curving to point with ball finials
on decorative square bases at top. Heavily moulded wooden eaves
cornice. Each gazebo comprises a simple square plan. Single
storey. Single C20, 2-light casement with leaded lights. Gazebo
right has semi-circular step up to C20, glazed double doors in left
wall with wood glazing bars in flat brick headed surround with
decorative limestone keystone over.
Interior: domed ceiling painted with 4 Chinese blue and white
vases. Right wall with projecting ledge decorated with hand
painted tiles, probably from France and the Low Countries,
collected by Lawrence Johnston. National Trust property.
