House. 1834. By George Webster. For Joseph Gibson. Stone rubble with ashlar
dressings, the south facade ashlar, slate roofs. South facade of 2 storeys with
attic, 5 bays, the 2nd and 4th bays are narrow and break forward, the outer bays
break further forward under gables. Dripcourse over ground floor, top cornice
and blocking course; gables are coped and have 3 corbelled pinnacles with ball
finials; rusticated quoins. Double-chamfered-mullioned windows with transoms
and labels, most of 3 lights, but those to 2nd and 4th bays and those flanking
entrance are single lights; those to gables are stepped; windows to upper floors
have small-paned glazing. Gablet over central 1st floor window has cartouche
with armorial bearing, date and initials: "JG", 2 spike finials and
weathervane. West elevation similar, with 2-storey, 3-bay service wing to
north. Main part of 4 bays, the outer bays breaking forward with 2-storey
canted bay windows; central bays have 2-light windows with gable over both.
Service wing has 2-light windows and entrance with sidelight and over light to
3rd bay. Gable-end stacks to higher outer bays. Service wing has 2-light
double-chamfered-mullioned windows and entrance with overlight and flanking
lights. Gable-end stack and cross-axial stack. North elevation has 2 gabled
bays with later infill bay. 1st bay has projecting gable-end stack. Sashes,
some with glazing bars. Entrance with datestone over reading: "EGM/1700".
East elevation has canted projection to gabled 1st bay; 3rd bay recessed over
lean-to kitchen outshut, with 4-light stair window; 2nd bay return has pointed
windows, sashed with glazing bars, and stack. End 2 bays has gabled dormer and
3-storey gabled canted bay. Gable-end stack. Interior has ribbed plaster
ceilings, stone fireplaces and panelling. Hall has stair to 2 sides, gallery to
2 sides with turned balusters, pendant ceiling and skylight. Dining room has
alcove with fitted sideboard, fireplace has copper Art Noveau insert. Library
has bookcases with small-paned glazing.
