Curtain wall to west and north-west and barn to north-west of Middleton Hall (q.v.)

Curtain wall running approx. 36.5m north-south and approx. 14.5m east-west;
approx. 5.5m high, and barn. Wall mid C15; barn C16 with extension to east of
c1850. Stone rubble with some ashlar and stone slate roof. West elevation of
curtain wall has remains of corbelled parapet. Wall terminates short of
south-west angle. North end has corbelled-out base probably to turret.
Entrance has possibly later segmental arch. Two lights above have cusped round
heads and label moulds; similar window to north end. Opening possibly to
garderobe shaft to ground level. East elevation has fireplace to right of
entrance at upper level and chimney flue to left; no other remains of
gatehouse. North elevation has corbels to west end, which has two blocked
chamfered lights to ground floor and one to 1st floor; gable end has truncated
projecting stack behind curtain wall. Barn entrance further east. South
elevation has chamfered blocked light and 2-light single-chamfered-mullioned
window, mullion missing. Entrance with 3-centred head to east. Barn entrance
to east has segmental head and doors with strap hinges. Signs of openings to
1st floor level of west end. Interior has four collar and tie-beam trusses, cross
wall, and three queen-post trusses to east end. Blocked segmental-headed fireplace
and some chamfered beams to west end. Scheduled Ancient Monument.
