Sir John Spilman (also spelt Spielman) - died 1626. Jeweller to Elizabeth I, and knighted by James I. Spilman is reputed to have been responsible for introducing Lime (Linden) trees into the UK. Spilman established Britain's 1st successful paper mill, paper of such quality that demand was instant. He marked each sheet with the figure of a fool, taken from his coat of arms - see base of tomb - hence the term Foolscap. Shakespeare wrote his plays on this paper.
