2/114 The Toll House
- II
Former toll house for the Nottingham-Tamworth road, now house. Circa 1830 with
minor C20 alterations and rear extensions. Whitewashed roughcast, hipped slate
roof, central whitewashed roughcast chimney. One storey; 3 bays, the centre bay
projecting and canted. Slight chamfered plinth, flat eaves. Original 2-light
casements in Tudor-Gothick style, in rectangular openings but with Gothick
leaded glazing in arched wooden frames. Above each window is a heavy hood on
heavy shaped scroll brackets. Central doorway, with similar hood, has been part
blocked and part replaced by a smaller matching window, also old and perhaps
resited. Present entry is via C20 door in rightside of projection, in small C20
porch with hipped roof and leaded glazing. Set back to right is a C20 flat-
roofed extension with 3-light barred wooden casement to front and entry in right
side.
