House. Mid C18, altered and extended late C19. Red brick, 2-span hipped roof
of plain tiles, brick chimney. Double pile; 3 storeys and cellars; 5 bays.
Chamfered plinth, dentil string courses, dentil eaves. Blue brick diapers
between windows of top storey. Boxed, 3-pane sashes, 3 to centre of first
floor, shorter windows to bays 2 and 4 of second floor. Other upper widows have
been blocked with brick, but all have original flat brick arches. Ground floor
altered late C19 and has canted bay windows with sashes between pilasters.
Central half-glazed door with semi-circular fanlight, panelled reveals and early
C19 doorcase. Doorcase has reeded pilasters, reeded brackets with guttae, and
open pediment. In front of door a late C19 verandah extends between the bay
windows, with wooden arcade, balustrade, tiled roof and central projection over
steps. To right of house is a late C19 2-storey brick extension with cogged
eaves and slate roof. This has 3 bays of irregular casements and sashes, and
pent roof over C20 bay window, door and casement to left. Interior of house
refurbished 1890s and later. A house on this site is shown on an estate map of
1730 and was the agent's house for the estate of the Company of Bowyers.
