Church. 1843-48 by William Hurst and W B Moffat, at the expense of the Aire
and Calder Navigation Company. Alterations of c1980 by Ronald Sims. Ashlar
and Welsh slate. Cruciform plan with 5-bay nave with south porch, 2-bay
transepts, crossing tower and 2-bay chancel. Polygonal vestry in angle of
chancel and north transept. Gothic Revival style. All windows pointed with
Perpendicular tracery and hoodmoulds. All bays articulated by stepped
buttresses terminating in gabled pinnacles. West end: 5-light transomed
window. Nave: 2-light windows. Pointed doorway with statue niche above to
porch. Transepts: north and south windows are 5-light with transoms. East
and west windows are 2 light. Pointed doorway beneath gable to east of
north transept. 3-stage tower with 2 trefoil-cusped lancets to each face to
first stage, clock face flanked by 4 blind panels with trefoil-cusped
tracery to second stage and two 2-light belfry openings to third stage ,
divided by stepped buttresses. Angle buttresses, openwork parapet with
gargoyles, 8 pinnacles. Broach spire with flying buttresses. Angle between
chancel and south transept contains a staircase turret with pointed door,
lancets and hexagonal cap. Single-storey vestry to north has pointed
doorway to north, and 2-light windows, with blind parapet. Chancel: 2-light
windows to north and south. 5-light transomed window to east. Stone
copings to gables and plain coped parapets throughout. Interior: much
altered in 1980's with insertion of unsympathetic stripped pine ceiling,
altar and altar rails. Fine original wrought-iron screen to choir and
