Former Commercial Buildings, now shops and houses. Includes section
fronting onto Chapel Street. 1826 by Woodhead and Hurst of Doncaster for
Aire and Calder Navigation; later C19 shop fronts. Brick, stuccoed. Welsh
slate roof. Occupies site on corner of Chapel Street. 2 storeys, 2 first-
floor windows to Adam Street front. Pilaster strips to end of each
elevation. Shop front to rounded corner has central C20 board door beneath
original overlight in reveal, flanked by 3-transomed-light shop windows to
each street. To left (Adam Street), another similar shop front with 6-
fielded-panel door and overlight in reveal to left, and 3-light shop window
to right. All shop fronts have doors and windows in wooden surrounds with
pilasters, carved consoles (missing to Chapel Street front) and plain frieze
with dosserets, cornice. and hood. All windows partly boarded up at time of
resurvey. First floor: window to corner with unsympathetic C20 glazing in
original eared and shouldered architrave; pair of later C19 4-pane sashes to
left in original surrounds with sills and eared and shouldered architraves.
Worn bracketed raised tablet between sashes inscribed:

BUILDINGS

Moulded cornice, coped parapet. Large corniced roof stack to Adam Street
front; corniced ridge stack to Chapel Street front. Roof hipped to corner.
Interior not investigated. Forms part of a terrace with the Royal Hotel
(qv). Interior altered in C20. Part of the original planned port
