Lower House Farmhouse

Farmhouse. Late C16, altered and refaced mid- to late C18 with further
mid-C19 and mid-C20 alterations. Timber-framed, partly rendered and partly
refaced or rebuilt in rubble with rubble additions. Slate roofs; roof of
main range is half-hipped at east end and hipped at west end. T-plan; main
range of three bays aligned east/west with intersecting cross-wing of two
framed bays at east end. Cross-wing has an external rendered rubble chimney
with moulded capping to stack at its west side elevation. Two storeys and
attic. Framing: not visible externally. North front elevation: main range
has two ground floor windows, one is blocked and has a rusticated lintel
and raised keyblock, the other has a 3-light C19 casement. There are two
3-light casements and a 2-light casement on the first floor, all with
rusticated lintels and raised keyblocks. Main entrance to left has a C20
gabled timber porch and a ledged and battened door. Cross-wing to right has
a first floor 3-light casement at its gable end and there is a door in the
angle with a blind, pointed transom light. Attic light at east end. A single-
bay C19 wing adjoins the east end of two storeys. It has a first floor 2-light
casement with a re-used held corbel beneath the sill and a partly-glazed C20
door in its north elevation. C20 single-storey addition to rear left.
Interior not inspected by the c oss-wing framing is said to be intact and have
square panels. (RCHM, III, p 77, item 13).
