5/33 Oxford House
11.6.59
GV II
Public house, now house. Probably C17 with later alterations. Sandstone
rubble and timber-frame with plaster infill. Stone and Welsh slate roofs
hipped to right. Two sandstone rubble end stacks with brick shafts and third
large off-ridge brick stack to right. U-plan with four-bay main range aligned
north/south and subsidiary arms to east. Two storeys, the upper one partly in
attic. West elevation has three windows, low-set attic dormers, probably late
C19 with gables and 2-light mid-C19 glazing bar casements. Ground floor has
three similar casements, but each of three lights with gabled C19 porch to
left of centre containing ledged mid-C19 door and transom light. Right-hand
part is underpinned in sandstone rubble. Frame is four square rectangular
panels high from cill to wall-plate. Right-hand rear wing incorporates mid-
C19 washhouse extension. Interior not inspected. Oxford House is said to
have been a public house until closed by the Harley Estate in the late C19.
