Farmhouse. Probably late C16 to early C17 with later alterations. Timber-
frame with brick infill and sandstone rubble granary extension. Sandstone
slate and tiled roofs with sandstone rubble side stack. T-plan with cross-
wing at west end of east/west range. Two storeys and attic. North elevation
has 3:1 windows, 2-light late C19 casements with gable front to right-hand
side. Ground floor has similar windows. Gable has 2-light late C20 window
to left of centre. Ground floor of gable has 4-light moulded mullioned and
transomed window with heavy oak cill. Above, a restored pair of brackets
support jettied first storey. Entry with 6-panelled early C19 door in main
range immediately to left of gable. Frame of cross-wing has two square panels
from plinth to first floor above which are three to wall-plate. Main range
has walls four panels high. Granary, probably early C19, has two gabled
attic dormers each with a 2-light casement. Two casements to ground floor
have blue brick segmental heads. Brick tallet stairs rise from front of
left-hand return to ledged loft door. Interior not inspected. RCHM refers
to Ailey Farmhouse as Upper Ailey Farm. (RCHM, Vol III, p 100).
