Description

OVERBURY CP -
SO 9437 - 9537
9/110 Garden wall adjoining
Gardens House
to the north-east
GV II

Garden wall. C18 or C19, remodelled c1908 by Ernest Newton for Richard
Biddulph Martin with further mid-C20 alterations by Victor Heal. Coursed
limestone rubble with ashlar coping. It is about ten feet high and runs
due east for approximately 60 yards, then turns south for about four yards
before returning east once more for about three yards where it adjoins Baron
Villa (qv). About four yards from Gardens House is a square-headed gateway
which has a gate with three long lower cusped panels and an open balustraded
upper panel; (two of the turned balusters have been replaced by stick balusters).
The south return incorporates a public telephone box in the angle added in the
mid-C20 which has a doorway with a moulded stone ashlar architrave and a half-
glazed door. The wall forms a prominent feature at the centre of the village
and is situated opposite the churchyard of the Church of St Faith (qv). (Newton,
W G: The Life and Works of Ernest Newton, London, 1925).
