Ice house about 250 yards
north-west of Hanbury Hall
GV II
Ice house. Mid-C18. Brick. Circular plan; floor of about 12½ feet diameter;
the walls are cambered and rise to a diameter of about 16 feet at the springing
of the domed roof; the dome is about 20 feet high at its apex. The north-west
entrance passage is vaulted, about 28 feet long and slopes down from the pit to
a sump near the entrance door. There is also a hatchway on the opposite side of
the ice house through which it was filled; this is now glazed. West of the ice
house were a series of pools fitted with sluices where the ice was made. The
ice house is a particularly good example of its type. (The Hanbury Ice House,
National Trust leaflet; Hanbury Hall, The National Trust official guidebook,
1981, p 27).
