Fine monument to Roesia de Verdun, dated 1248, foundress of Grace Dieu Priory. Heavily restored and mounted on new base 1912. Recumbent carved effigy, wearing a wimple, with cusped canopy on shafts. Sides of canopy are carved with kneeling figures of nuns and the scene of Christ's baptism. Nicolaus Pevsner sees this as more of a copy than a restoration: It is made of alabaster - a stone not in use in the C13. The praying nuns may be the copyists decoration (they look rather C16). The original stone effigy of Roesia was said to have been brought to Belton at the Dissolution of the Monasteries in Henry VIII's time. (Photo Aug 2007).
