Gate lodge, probably late C19. Rendered brick on stone plinth, steeply-
pitched roofs with 2 ridge chimneys. Square plan of one storey with roof
composed of 2 pairs of parallel ridges intersecting at right angles to
make 2 gables to each side. Symmetrical; walls painted and rendered to
match pattern of Samlesbury Hall (q.v.) i.e. black with 4 rows of white
quatrefoils; central front door flanked by 6-light mullioned and transomed
windows; each side wall has 2 similar windows. Incised inscription on
north side of plinth identifying as originally in south wall of
Blackburn Parish Church the following:-

(illegible) THOU DOE THY WORKE BEGINE THANK GOD CRAVE PARDON FOR THEY
SIN AND THEN THY WORKE SHAL PROSPER SO AS WANT SHAL NEVER
BREED THEE WOE. 1614. M. HAYE
