north-east of Old Hall
Farmhouse
GV II
Cruck-framed barn, probably C16 fabric reconstructed at a later date, with
modern walls and roof. Common brick, translucent corrugated sheet roof.
Rectangular plan. Two storeys, being lofted throughout. West side wall of
common brick incorporates applied timbers indicating the position of the
principal internal structures, and has various openings of little interest;
south gable and east side wall appear to be of C18 brick, and the former has a
simple relief pattern depicting 2 boars heads and 2 shuttles (presumably
representing the Barton and the Shuttleworth families). Interior: composite
frame consisting of 4 full cruck trusses (A) and 2 principal rafter trusses
(B), arranged from north to south A, B, A, B, A, A. The cruck trusses have
(at loft level) collars run out as spurs to carry dorsals, and yokes; the
other trusses have upper and lower collars.
