8/15 Outbuilding south-east of
17-4-1967 Brook House (Previously listed as
- II Outbuilding to Brook House)
Former wheelwright's shop, now used for storage. Probably C18th with C19th
alterations. Walls of brick, mud and turf, with corrugated iron roof over
thatch. Single storey. Original building appears to have had 3 trusses
supported on brick piers, the walls being infilled with turf. The piers
survive, but the gables have been rebuilt in a larger C19th brick, as has
the western half of the south-west (rear) wall. The north-east wall
retains its turf infill and has 3 windows with timber lintels and plain
reveals. To the right of the left-hand window is a smaller unglazed opening.
The north-west gable has a sliding door, and a window with plain reveals
above. Against the south-east gable is a C19th extension of no
architectural interest. The rear wall has, in the left-hand half, a door
with plain reveals within the C19th brick infill. To the right the turf
survives and has a window flanked by 2 unglazed openings. Interior. One
central upper cruck truss, re-using full crucks as principals, remains.
The purlins and ridge to the southern half have been renewed. To the north
they remain, and have windbrace slots. Curved windbraces from the truss to
the ridge survive. Numerous beams span the building at eaves level, but do
not support a loft. At the northern end 4 collars span the purlins.
