CLAUGHTON SMITHY LANE
SD 54 SW
8/79 Claughton Smithy (formerly listed as
17-4-1967 Street Smithy)
- II
House, late C17, altered, with C19 former smithy. Slobbered rubble with
slate roof. House of 2 bays which have rebated and chamfered mullioned
windows of 3 and 2 lights on the ground floor and windows with plain
reveals on the 1st floor. Chamfered fire window at left. Gable chimneys
have brick caps. Projecting brick weathering on the left-hand (east) gable
wall suggests that a lower building with thatched roof once adjoined. The
single-storey smithy now adjoins under a monopitch roof and extends to
north and south of the main house. Its east wall has a wide doorway with
quoined reveals and windows with plain reveals. The house is entered
through a porch at the rear which leads to a baffle entry against a former
firehood. The chamfered and stopped bressumer remains, and supports 2
chamfered and stopped axial main joists.
