7/38 Former Vicarage to Church of
St. Saviour
-
GV II
Vicarage, probably 1864-5 by E.W. Tarn (vide Church of St. Saviour);
now in course of renovation for other purposes. Coursed sandstone rubble
with quoins, slate roof with bands of green fishscale slates, stone gable
copings, chimney at left gable and diagonal chimney on ridge. Three
bays with short projecting wing to centre. Two and a half storeys,
in late medieval style, with mullioned and transomed windows.
Principal feature of interest is projecting bay to centre which is gabled
on the left but treated on the right as a 3-stage tower terminating just
above the gable with a quatrefoil-pierced parapet and small pyramidal roof;
ground floor of this part has an arched doorway with a roundel in the head,
1st floor has a narrow window with a transom, and top stage has a cusped
lancet in the front and right side walls. Gabled part has one cross
window on each floor; 1st bay has 3 windows in matching style; 3rd bay has
cross window at ground floor, and at 1st floor a cusped trefoil window with
a little gablet breaking the eaves. Right gable wall has polygonal
bay window at ground floor, cross window above and small attic window.
