BACUP
KING STREET
Nos. 9 and 11

(Formerly listed as No. 9)

II
House and shop, 1860s. Rock-faced blocks of sandstone with dressings of carved stone and polished stone, slate roof with gable chimneys. Three bays and two storeys. At ground floor the first two bays are occupied by a large original shop front framed by rusticated quoins, consoles and decorated entablature, with recessed panelled doors in the centre flanked by full-height three-light windows held by slender columns with shaft-rings, dividing at the top to give slightly arched heads to the lights. To the right of this the third bay has a narrow doorway with plain jambs which have carved imposts, and a sashed window: this window, and the three windows at first floor, are all recessed and have shafts of polished stone with foliated capitals, moulded shouldered lintels, and, together with the door, all have a round intrados and pointed extrados, with banded voussoirs. Hoodmoulds to first floor windows are continuous and there is a modillioned cornice. Rear wall has triangular-headed sashed windows.

History: office of Bacup Times.
