5/40 Crosse Hall Farmhouse
21.12.1966 and attached barn
- II
Farmhouse, dated 1667, altered, now house, with later barn attached at
right end. Coursed sandstone rubble, slate roof with 2 brick chimneys
close to left gable. Square plan. Two storeys and attic; plinth and
quoins; door offset to right has rectangular lintel dated 1667, a small
rectangular window to right, a modern casement to left and 2 above; to
the left of these on each floor is a small round-headed window with
hollow spandrels and parts of hoodmould, both blocked (and possibly ex
situ); above the door is random rubble and one jamb suggesting a former
opening, with part of a hoodmould. Left gable has at ground and at 1st
floor a 3-light stone mullion window, the lower lacking one mullion, the
upper lacking both mullions and now blocked; a square attic window above;
irregular inserted masonry at rear corner of 1st floor may indicate
former door. Rear wall has 2 square windows on each floor and modern
porch. Large barn under same roof, probably C18, of rubble with quoins
and central segmental-arched wagon doorway with dressed stone voussoirs.
Interior of house altered. Original function not known but probably
associated with Crosse Hall (demolished).
