Church. 1840 by E. Sharpe (Pevsner); altered. Square sandstone, slate
roof. Nave and chancel, west steeple. Mixed Gothick style. Five-bay
buttressed nave, the westernmost bay with gablets containing lancets, and
that on the south side with an arched doorway; otherwise, each bay has a
tall square-headed window of 2 cusped lights, with a hoodmould; chancel has
a large 5-light Perpendicular window. Slender west tower, partly embraced
by nave, has diagonal buttresses, tall 1st stage formerly open with high
2-centred arches on 3 sides (these now filled with 2-stage walling
incorporating a west door and various compatible windows), dripbands on 2
levels, single-light cusped belfry louvres with run-out hoodmoulds, stepped
parapet with crocketed pinnacles, and slender octagonal spire. Interior:
heavy roof trusses with cusped open panels; west gallery on 2 iron columns;
moulded and chamfered chancel arch with shafts which have foliated
capitals. Note: building closely resembles Church of St. John the
Evangelist, Bretherton CP (q.v.) by the same architect and of the same
date.
