9/27 Fishstones and Lamp
(formerly listed as
28.12.55 The Fishstones)
II
Fishstones, 1829, to replace an earlier set. sandstone. Flat slabs of
stone set on stone uprights to form two semi-circular counters from which
fish was sold on market days. In the middle stands a cast-iron lamp
standard, originally placed there in 1872 at the expense of
Thomas Langton Birley, subsequently removed and then replaced in 1982. It
has a tall richly decorated base, a fluted shaft once supporting a central
lamp and three brackets, perhaps for peripheral lamps; only the central
lamp is now present.
