The tower is said to date from the early 1800s when nearby Capernwray Hall was built. However, I would suggest that it is in fact a medieval Pele Tower, perhaps converted for the gamekeeper and his family. Pele Towers were built to provide a defence against the lawless armed bands known as the Scottish Reivers who operated each side of the Scottish border from the late 13th century until Tudor times. This tower is almost identical to nearby Arnside Tower (ref: 1312275) at Arnside in South Cumbria - a known Pele Tower.
